Health Costs to Burn Coal
In recent years, the Government of Ontario has been very clear about the need to phase out coal-fired power plants in our province. The Environmental Commissioner has listed smog, climate change and mercury pollution as some of the many risks related to this form of energy generation. Additionally, the Ontario Medical Association released a report in 2008 linking the effects of these pollutants to a number of health issues, such as:
- 21,000 deaths in 2008, 2,682 due to acute short-term exposure;
- 11,000 hospital admissions;
- 92,000 emergency room visits;
- 620,000 doctor’s office visits;
- 710,000 air pollution-related deaths by 2031.
At Solar Power Network, we are looking to the future. With these severe risks associated with traditional energy production, it’s never been more important to join the solar revolution and work to eliminate these increasing risks for generations to come.
